Swimwear is always interesting because you kind of have no choice but to have some fun with it. It’s an inherently recreational category of dress. That’s why we love swimsuit trends 2024. There’s no workplace dresscode, no wedding dress code, no wondering if your grandma will hate it. You’re on vacation or at the beach or at the pool. Honestly you might even be like me, wearing a bathing suit at the park because it’s New York City, and people start stripping when it gets warm out.
Bathing suit trends are usually just a reflection of fashion trends at large, and this is the case here as well. We’ve been seeing crochet and metallic fabrics on gowns across runways. We’ve also been seeing a ton of layering basics, like t-shirts and tank tops among young people, in music scenes, and in youth culture.
I am also really into the fact that one piece suits seem to be on trend because I’ve always thought they were cute, and I hate that they’re labeled as matronly. They feel vintage and hot.
We’ve rounded up six of our favorite swimwear trends for summer 2024 and places to shop them.
Crochet

Crochet is trendy in every clothing and accessory category, so of course it’s on trend in swim. It doesn’t hurt that crochet bathing suits are also pretty easy to DIY, even if you’re fairly new to crochet.

One Shoulder One Pieces

People hate on one-piece bathing suits, but they’re sexy! They have amazing cut-out potential and look very cute with shorts or cover-ups.

Carlie One Piece
One of my favorite trends for the summer is animal print, and this one-piece with a cheetah print belt is the perfect trend overlap.
House of Harlow x REVOLVE Peyton One Piece
I love this one because it’s technically not a one-shoulder bathing suit, it’s a halter. But it still gives that effect.Layers

We’re layering our t-shirts, layering our tank tops, and now we’re layering our bathing suits. These layered bathing suits are a gorgeous update to colorblocking.

Lovewave Carra Top
This bathing suit looks like two layered sports bras.
LSPACE Finneas Top
Thistwo-piece also comes in four gorgeous colorways.Metallics

Metallic bathing suits look like mermaid scales. and they also kind of naturally look wet. We’ve seen metallics all over the runways in other categories, in fabrics like satin and silk.

Luli Fama Midnight Waves Laced Up One Piece
This one-piece is hot, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. The wide neckline and thin straps really open up the chest and neck area visually.
Brigitte Carnaval Sequinned Bikini Set
This bathing suit set from Brigitte is perfect for the beach or an Olivia Rodrigo concert if you swap the bottoms for a sequin skirt.Metal Grommets

These metal grommets are in the cultural zeitgeist from the corset trend, but they also really hit that metal stud spike vibe that was really popular amongst skate fashion in the 2000s.

L’AGENCE Alexandria Bikini Top
This bikini with a metal grommet lined neckline is kinda goth vibes. Off screen, there are fishnet tights and combat boots in my imagination.
Karla Colletto Lucy Lace Up Underwire Tank One Piece
This one piece has underwire for extra supprt and a front-facing corset with metal grommets.Flared Straps

Sometimes it’s ruffles, sometimes it’s bows, sometimes it’s rosettes. But we’ve been seeing flared sleeves and straps on dresses, tops, cardigans, you name it. Those trends always trickle into accessory and swim.

Sea Lemika Crochet Flutter Sleeve Bikini Top
This red bikini has such a cottagecore shoulder flare. It’s girly and romantic.
Ancora The Retro Mademoiselle One Piece
This gingham one piece has really cute bows at the shoulders and a plunging neckline.
